US Seeks Iran Denuclearisation in Long-Term Deal
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington’s long-term objective in negotiations with Iran is the “denuclearisation of Iran”, as diplomatic efforts continue over a broader agreement between the two countries.
Speaking at the White House, Rubio described Iran’s denuclearisation as the “ultimate deal” sought by Washington, signalling that the US is seeking a long-term arrangement rather than only short-term measures.
Rubio also addressed the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz, saying the vital waterway remains open and that commercial vessels continue to transit through it.
He said the United States is engaged in discussions involving Iran and Oman over measures that could allow more commercial ships to pass safely through the strait in the near term.
The discussions are taking place alongside broader diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a long-term agreement with Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping route, carrying a significant share of the world’s energy supplies. Any disruption to maritime traffic in the waterway could have wider implications for international trade and energy markets.
Rubio’s comments indicate that Washington is pursuing two tracks at the same time — immediate measures to improve maritime security and longer-term negotiations focused on Iran’s nuclear programme.
The US says achieving the denuclearisation of Iran remains its ultimate objective as diplomatic efforts continue.
