PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron will undertake an official two-day state visit to neighbouring Spain starting September 29, the Spanish government announced on Monday.

The diplomatic gathering marks the first official state visit by a French president to the country since 2009.

The centrist French leader will be officially received by Spain's leftist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on September 30. Additionally, a formal banquet will be held in Macron's honour hosted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

According to Macron's office, both nations share a common commitment to safeguarding democracy and young people, especially regarding emerging challenges posed by social media and artificial intelligence.

Both leaders will also address major international issues, specifically the ongoing situations in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The upcoming trip serves as Macron's first official visit to Spain since January 2023.

During that previous meeting, Macron and Sanchez signed a bilateral friendship treaty, which has yet to be ratified by Spain due to objections from the country's right-wing opposition.
