United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg has expressed deep concern over the renewed attacks by Ansar Allah on commercial shipping and the disruption of maritime navigation in the Red Sea, warning that the escalation could derail efforts to maintain peace in Yemen.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Grundberg said he had been engaging intensively in recent weeks with Yemeni, regional and international stakeholders as tensions continue to rise.
He stressed that his immediate priority remains safeguarding the gains achieved under the 2022 truce, preventing a return to large-scale conflict, and creating the conditions for an inclusive political process.
The UN envoy warned that continued escalation could push Yemen towards further confrontation, drawing the country deeper into an already unstable regional environment while worsening the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people.
Grundberg said there was still an opportunity to reverse the current course through negotiations that address Yemen's political, economic and security challenges, while placing the interests of its people at the centre of any solution.
He added that reaching a negotiated political settlement in Yemen would not only benefit the country but also contribute to greater stability across the wider region.
