China landslide death toll rises to 11, 50 still missing

Beijing: A landslide in southwestern China killed at least 11 people and left 50 others missing, police said, as rescue crews continued their desperate search through masses of mud and debris.
Following severe rainfall, a landslip devastated Pengshui County in Chongqing municipality, burying homes, shops, and other facilities. Rescue crews investigating the site found "no signs of life" among the wreckage, sparking concerns that the death toll could rise even more.
Rescue workers have been working nonstop to clean the landslip and seek for survivors, but the extent of the devastation and tough terrain have hampered rescue attempts. Authorities have dispatched staff and heavy equipment to the scene as relatives await word on those still missing.
The occurrence came amid a period of severe summer rainfall in regions of China, when intense downpours have raised the risk of flash floods, landslides, and other weather-related calamities. Rescue activities and efforts to locate all those affected are ongoing.
