Paris: French Jewish DJ Barbara Butch has filed criminal complaints after activists disrupted her performance in Grenoble, saying the incident crossed the line from protest into violence.

According to her lawyer, the complaints include allegations of incitement to hatred and violence, assault, and obstruction of artistic freedom.

The disruption followed criticism of Butch for signing a petition supporting an abandoned proposal to broaden France's legal definition of anti-Semitism. Campaigners linked to the cultural boycott movement over Israel's war in Gaza targeted the DJ, while critics of the proposed law argued it could silence advocacy for Palestinian rights.

Butch said she endured verbal abuse and had objects thrown at her during the performance, later saying she would not wish the experience on anyone. She has since expressed regret over signing the petition. The controversy has also sparked debate over the limits of protest and who should become the target of cultural boycott campaigns.
