15-Year-Old Drops Lawsuit Against Meta Over Alleged Social Media Addiction

Los Angeles: A 15-year-old Florida boy has withdrawn his lawsuit against Meta, just days before a trial over claims that Instagram contributed to his depression and anxiety.
The teenager, identified as RKC, said he became addicted to social media after starting to use it at about eight years old, with the habit affecting his sleep and mental health.
His lawyers said he decided to drop the case after settlements were reached with other defendants and because he wanted to avoid a lengthy trial and focus on his recovery. Meta said he withdrew the lawsuit without receiving any payment.
The case was part of a growing wave of lawsuits accusing major social media companies of designing addictive platforms that harm children. Meta and YouTube were ordered to pay $6 million in a separate Los Angeles case, while Meta was also ordered to pay $375 million in penalties in a New Mexico lawsuit.
More than 2,000 plaintiffs, including families, schools and state officials, have filed similar cases against Meta, YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat.
