Addis Ababa: Even camels, renowned for their ability to survive the world's harshest deserts, are increasingly struggling as extreme heat and prolonged drought intensify across Africa. Scientists and herders warn that climate change is pushing the resilient animals beyond their natural limits, with camel deaths rising in several affected regions.

Herders say scorching ground is causing painful blisters on camels' feet, while shrinking grazing lands and dwindling water sources are making it harder for herds to find food and survive. Longer and more intense dry seasons are forcing communities to travel farther in search of pasture, placing additional stress on both animals and people.

For millions across Africa, camels are essential for transport, milk production and household incomes. Their declining health is therefore becoming a growing concern for rural livelihoods that depend heavily on the animals every day.

Experts say urgent measures to improve water access, protect grazing areas and strengthen climate resilience will be critical as rising temperatures continue to reshape Africa's desert landscapes.
