Georgetown: At least 27 people have been confirmed dead after a ferry capsized off the coast of Guyana, with search teams continuing efforts to locate dozens of missing passengers.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips said 69 people have been rescued since the MV Barima overturned on Saturday night, while 83 others remain missing. He said authorities remain hopeful that more survivors will be found.

The ferry was travelling from Georgetown to the Essequibo region when it capsized. Officials now believe 179 people were on board after earlier uncertainty over the number of passengers. The passenger manifest, which listed 133 people, was later found to be inaccurate.

Search operations have been intensified, with the search area expanded to more than 1,000 square kilometres. Local fishermen have joined the rescue effort, while France has deployed divers, doctors and technical personnel from neighbouring French Guiana to assist in the operation.
