Santiago: Chile has declared a state of emergency after a major storm system caused torrential rains and severe weather, killing at least ten people, officials said.
Heavy rains have resulted in severe flooding, landslides, and significant infrastructural damage throughout the country. Roads are blocked, residences and public institutions have been impacted, and thousands of citizens have experienced power and transportation outages.
Emergency services have been dispatched to rescue persons stranded by the water and assist those forced to flee their houses. Authorities have also issued warnings about the possibility of more flooding and landslides as more rain is expected in impacted areas.
While officials continue to analyse the entire extent of the storm-related damage, government declaration of emergency aims to accelerate rescue, relief, and recovery activities.
