Food Delivery Rider Wins One of China's Top Literary Prizes

Beijing: Chinese food delivery rider Wang Jibing has won the prestigious Lu Xun Literary Prize for his poetry collection Low Flight, inspired by the lives and struggles of delivery workers.
The 56-year-old, who took up food delivery work in 2019 after years of doing odd jobs, wrote many of his poems between deliveries, often on scraps of paper. Published in 2024, Low Flight draws on interviews with around 200 delivery riders and reflects the challenges of China's growing gig economy.
Wang first gained national attention in 2022 when his poem Man in a Hurry went viral online. Despite receiving one of China's highest literary honours, he said he has no plans to stop working as a delivery rider, saying he enjoys the job and wants to remain grounded.
The Lu Xun Literary Prize, named after the father of modern Chinese literature, is among the country's most prestigious awards and recognises outstanding works across several literary genres.
