IAEA Reviews Reported Strike on Iran Nuclear Plant Site

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is investigating reports of an overnight attack on the construction site of the planned Darkhovin nuclear power plant in Iran.

According to the UN nuclear watchdog, the facility is still in the very early stages of construction and contained no nuclear material during its most recent inspection, meaning the reported incident is not expected to pose any radiological or environmental risk.

Nevertheless, the IAEA said it is closely monitoring developments and has contacted the Iranian authorities to verify the reports and gather additional information.

Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated his longstanding call for maximum military restraint in the vicinity of all nuclear-related sites, stressing that any military action targeting such facilities could have serious consequences for nuclear safety, security and regional stability. The agency underscored the importance of protecting nuclear infrastructure during times of conflict and reaffirmed its commitment to providing independent, technical assessments based on verified information.
