KYIV: Ukraine has received 501 bodies of fallen soldiers returned from Russia in one of the few remaining areas of cooperation between the warring neighbors. The repatriation effort was officially announced on Thursday.
In a reciprocal move, Russia received the bodies of 31 of its own soldiers. The delicate humanitarian exchange was facilitated with the direct assistance of the Red Cross.
Kyiv's prisoners of war center stated that investigators and forensic experts will now begin identifying the repatriated remains. The bodies are believed to belong to Ukrainian servicemen.
Since the 2022 invasion, swapping prisoners and the remains of fallen fighters has remained a rare, critical point of contact between Moscow and Kyiv.
