Kinshasa: The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo could be two to four times larger than official figures indicate. This surge marks the third-largest Ebola crisis ever recorded.
According to the latest data, the virus has infected over 1,960 people and caused more than 700 deaths in just two months. Health officials report that the virus is spreading faster than ever before.
The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo species, currently has no approved vaccine or treatment. It has spread across five DRC provinces and reached neighboring Uganda, outpacing local and international response efforts.
Alarmingly, many newly reported cases are individuals who passed away within their communities without accessing medical facilities. While testing and treatment capacity are increasing, the situation remains deeply concerning for global health authorities.
