Zelensky Rejects Wartime Election Call, Warns Vote Could ‘Split’ Ukraine

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected a call for elections during the ongoing conflict with Russia, warning that voting now could exacerbate divides and split the country.
Former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov made the proposal, urging Ukraine to resume democratic processes despite martial law. Ukrainian legislation currently prevents national elections while martial law is in effect.
Zelensky stated that holding elections during ongoing combat would pose significant security and logistical hazards, notably to soldiers, displaced Ukrainians, and citizens in occupied territory. He stated that his top objective remains resolving the fighting while protecting Ukraine's independence and unity.
