Berlin makes bid to build more US weaponry in Germany

BERLIN: Germany is actively seeking to expand defense industry ties with the United States by manufacturing US-designed weaponry within its domestic factories.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the strategic pitch on Wednesday, noting that overstretched American production capacities are severely limited despite an urgent, surging global demand for key missiles and interceptors.
The defense proposal arrives immediately ahead of a major NATO summit scheduled in Turkey, where European military expansion remains heavily prioritized under intense defense-spending pressure from US President Donald Trump.
While Berlin intends to expand its own industrial autonomy and reduce foreign reliance, officials emphasize that acquiring critical American military hardware remains vital for continental deterrence over the next decade.
Consequently, major German defense contractors like Rheinmetall are already preparing to quickly scale up collaborative local production lines for key systems like Patriot missiles.
