Brussels: At least five people were killed, and numerous others suffered serious injuries after a devastating fire tore through a high-rise apartment building in Belgium on Wednesday morning.
The severe blaze broke out mid-morning inside an 80-unit residential complex located along the banks of the river Scheldt in the port city of Antwerp.
Large numbers of firefighters and medical personnel rushed to the scene as thick black smoke billowed from the upper floors of the building. Emergency crews quickly deployed ladders to evacuate trapped residents directly from their balconies.
Occupants reported hearing fire detectors before witnessing heavy smoke rapidly filling the corridors. Rescue teams continue to systematically search the heavily damaged structure to locate other potential victims. While the exact cause of the fatal inferno remains unknown, the prime minister expressed deep condolences to the evacuated families.
