Thessaloniki, Greece: Two people have died after a fast-moving wildfire swept through a residential area near Thessaloniki, destroying a house, forcing evacuations and triggering a major firefighting operation.
Authorities said the body of a man was found in a burnt area near the village of Liti, while a second unidentified body was discovered inside a house destroyed by the blaze. A woman rescued from the property with burn injuries is in stable condition in hospital, and a 12-year-old child has been reported missing.
The fire broke out in dry bushland near Liti on Tuesday afternoon before spreading rapidly due to strong winds. Several homes were damaged as the flames moved towards nearby communities, prompting officials to evacuate residents of Liti to a nearby safe area.
More than 100 firefighters, supported by dozens of fire engines and at least seven aircraft, are battling the wildfire, which has spread across a stretch of about five kilometres.
