Washington: US Vice President JD Vance said the US would be in a ‘great position’ even if the ongoing discussions with Iran fail, expressing optimism that Washington has tremendous influence despite the uncertainty of a final agreement.
Vance said the US hopes diplomacy succeeds, but emphasised that the country's strategic position will remain strong regardless of the outcome. He stated that Iran's stance has weakened and that recent developments strengthened Washington's power in the negotiations.
The comments come as efforts to reach a broader compromise on Iran's nuclear program and regional security continue following recent cease-fire talks. However, talks have experienced obstacles, with Iran stating that it will not meet US envoys, increasing questions about the possibilities of a long-term settlement.
Vance highlighted the administration's confidence in its strategic position by maintaining that the US is still dedicated to diplomacy while maintaining other options in the case that discussions fail.
