TEL AVIV: Former military chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot has officially initiated his political campaign to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The opposition leader launched the bid under his centrist Yashar party ahead of the planned national elections.
Speaking at his first electoral meeting, Eisenkot strongly criticized the current administration for severe strategic and security failures. He explicitly called for the removal of the government that presided over the devastating October 7 intelligence breakdowns.
The sixty-six-year-old general previously resigned from Netanyahu's emergency war cabinet, citing a complete lack of clear strategy. Eisenkot stated that Israel urgently requires honest leadership capable of restoring national direction and public trust.
Recent polling places the new opposition party right behind the ruling Likud faction in projected legislative seats. Eisenkot's platform focuses on establishing a state commission of inquiry and implementing shared national military service reforms.
Public support for the former commander remains high because his own family suffered personal losses during the conflict. The high-stakes political showdown will be decided when citizens cast their ballots later this autumn.
