PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met in Antibes, France, signaling a united front to strengthen cooperation in defence, space, and energy.
The summit produced concrete agreements, including a five-year defense roadmap focusing on Aster missiles and SAMP/T air defense systems. Both leaders also pledged support for a new European satellite project designed to compete with Starlink, highlighting the critical role of space in military strategy.
Addressing regional security, they proposed a multinational coalition to succeed the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, aiming to bolster the nation's sovereignty. The talks also signaled a desire for continued cooperation with the United States while navigating potential shifts in Washington.
Once strained, the relationship between the leaders has thawed, with both dismissing past frictions to focus on practical politics. While divided on issues like migration and Ukraine security guarantees, the summit marks a significant step toward a strategic partnership within the European Union.
