Naypyidaw: Myanmar's military is responsible for over 700 civilian deaths over a six-month election period, according to a United Nations report released Monday.
Verified incidents occurred between last August and January as the military attempted to secure territory and hold restricted polls. The UN rights office identified 224 women and 153 children among the dead. Air strikes involving jet fighters and drones caused at least 505 of these fatalities.
The report notes that serious human rights violations undermined the election's credibility, culminating in the appointment of coup leader Min Aung Hlaing as president.
The UN rights office emphasized that these figures rely on verified data and are not comprehensive. Consequently, the UN has called for the situation to be referred to the International Criminal Court and urged nations to halt the transfer of arms and jet fuel to the military
