Trump–Meloni Clash Erupts Over G7 Photo Claim and Iran Policy

War of words between U.S. President and Italian Prime Minister spills into public view

A public exchange has unfolded between U.S. President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following comments about their interactions during the G7 summit in France and differing positions on international security and military cooperation.

Trump claims strained ties and criticises Italy’s stance

President Trump alleged that Meloni repeatedly requested a photo with him during the G7 meeting, while also accusing her of political weakness at home. He further criticised her government’s approach to U.S.-led efforts to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

He claimed Italy had refused cooperation, including the use of military airbases, which he described as a “logistical inconvenience,” while also arguing that the United States contributes significantly to NATO allies’ security.

Trump also suggested that following U.S. military actions against Iran, Meloni was now seeking improved relations, adding: “No thanks.”

Meloni rejects claims, defends Italy’s sovereignty

In response, Giorgia Meloni dismissed Trump’s remarks as “senseless,” saying they were unprovoked and misleading.

She rejected the suggestion that her political standing depends on her relationship with Trump, stating that her popularity is based on defending Italy’s national interests.

Meloni also defended Italy’s position on U.S. military bases in the country, stressing that their use is governed by established agreements that her government continues to respect.

“Italy remains a sovereign nation,” she said, adding that such agreements “cannot be violated” while she remains in office.

‘Focus on your own popularity,’ Meloni tells Trump

Meloni concluded her response by rejecting Trump’s criticism of her domestic approval ratings, stating that her popularity is “none of his concern” and advising him to focus on his own political standing.

The exchange highlights ongoing tensions in rhetoric between the two leaders amid broader debates over NATO cooperation, Middle East security policy, and transatlantic relations.
