Beirut: At least five people were killed in southern Lebanon on Saturday after Israeli air strikes, drone attacks and artillery shelling hit several locations across the Nabatieh region, according to Lebanese state media.
The attacks came just hours after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect on Friday following an escalation in cross-border hostilities.
Lebanon's state news agency reported that Israeli warplanes and drones carried out strikes overnight and into Saturday morning, damaging homes and residential buildings. Artillery shelling was also reported in Nabatieh and nearby areas before dawn.
Three people were killed in the town of Arab Salim, while one person died in Deir Zahrani. Another was killed when a drone strike targeted a motorbike near the entrance to the town of Dweir.
The ceasefire agreement was confirmed by a senior Israeli official, two Hezbollah sources and a US official. According to the US official, the truce came into force at 4pm local time on Friday.
