Lima:  Peru’s leftist presidential candidate, Roberto Sanchez has proposed a joint vote recount to his conservative rival Keiko Fujimori following a razor-thin runoff election designed to end years of political instability.

With 98.27 percent of ballots from Sunday's second round counted, Fujimori holds a narrow lead with 50.005 percent of the votes against Sanchez's 49.995 percent. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Sanchez cited alleged irregularities in Lima and voting from abroad, urging an exhaustive review to ensure transparency. This proposal also followed a controversial demand from Fujimori’s party to annul votes from the south.

The sluggish count has officially entered its final phase, with challenged and disputed tally sheets under review. Electoral authorities stated that a definitive final tally could take between two and three weeks to complete due to the standard procedure required for handling contested sheets
