Houston : DR Congo's national football team arrived in Houston for the 2026 World Cup as an Ebola outbreak back home prevented many supporters from travelling to the tournament.

The World Health Organization has reported 676 confirmed cases and 136 deaths linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in eastern DR Congo, where there is currently no vaccine or treatment. U.S. authorities required the Congolese squad to complete a 21-day isolation period in Belgium before entering the country.

While many fans from Congo have been unable to attend because of the restrictions and costs involved, members of the Congolese diaspora in Texas have rallied behind the team, welcoming the Leopards with flags, music and celebrations.

DR Congo is making its first World Cup appearance since 1974, when the country competed as Zaire. The team opens its campaign against Portugal on June 17 before facing Colombia and Uzbekistan in the group stage.

Supporters said they hope the team's historic return to football's biggest stage can offer a moment of pride and unity for people back home amid the ongoing health crisis.
