Russian Drone Hits Kyiv-Warsaw Train Near Poland

A Russian drone struck a passenger train travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw on Sunday near Ukraine’s border with NATO member Poland, damaging the locomotive but causing no casualties, Ukrainian and Polish officials said.

Ukraine said the drone attack occurred about two kilometres from the Polish border and hit the locomotive of the passenger train. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had deliberately targeted the train as part of wider attacks on the country’s western regions.

“All necessary services are working near the Polish-Ukrainian border in Volyn, where the Russians deliberately burned a train locomotive and damaged a gas station in a drone strike,” Zelensky said.

He said Russian forces had also targeted railway and energy infrastructure, as well as residential and other civilian buildings in western Ukraine.

Poland’s PKP Intercity said the train was carrying 206 passengers from Kyiv to Warsaw. No casualties were reported by either country.

The rail service was delayed by more than six hours, but was expected to continue to Warsaw after passengers and the train completed border checks.

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said one drone struck near the Dorohusk-Yagodyn border crossing, while another hit the passenger train.

“We are treating these events with the utmost seriousness. The situation is being monitored on an ongoing basis,” Kierwinski said.

The attacks came days after US envoys visited Moscow and Kyiv as Washington stepped up efforts to revive negotiations aimed at ending the war, now in its fifth year.
