Sydney: A lady suffered serious injuries after being mauled by a shark while swimming at Coogee Beach in Sydney on Saturday morning, leading police to close neighbouring beaches and conduct a hunt for the animal.
The woman, thought to be in her 30s, had major injuries to her arm and leg during the incident, which occurred near the shore. Before emergency services came, bystanders rushed in to help her get out of the water and offer first aid.a
She was later taken to a hospital in severe condition for immediate care.
Authorities closed Coogee Beach and other nearby beaches as marine rescue teams and drones monitored shark activity in the region. Officials have asked swimmers to keep out of the water until further notice.
The incident has raised new fears about shark encounters along Australia's eastern coastline, where similar attacks have been reported in recent years.
