Nigeria says 13,000 ‘terrorists’ killed in past year amid ongoing security crackdown

Lagos: Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, said that the nation's security and military forces had killed around 13,000 ‘terrorists’ in the previous year, emphasising what he called "intensified counter-insurgency operations across the country."

The claim is made in the midst of Nigeria's continuous struggle against several armed factions, such as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram in the northeast and armed ‘bandit’ organisations in the northwest and central regions.

Thousands of deaths have been reported since the start of the Boko Haram fight in 2009, and Nigeria has long faced multiple security problems involving insurgency, mass kidnappings, and rural attacks.

Authorities say recent military attacks, airstrikes, and joint operations with international allies have put more pressure on insurgent networks, but violence continues in many regions.
