Four Killed as Car Crashes Into School Cycling Group in Netherlands

The Hague: A automobile crashed into a group of bikers on a school camping trip in the southern Netherlands, killing four people, including three children, according to authorities. The disaster happened near the village of Vogelwaarde in Zeeland province, close to the Belgian border.
The victims are among 14 students and two adult supervisors from a primary school in Axel, a nearby town. Two children and one adult died at the spot, while another child died from injuries at a Rotterdam hospital. Several more children were severely injured and transported to hospitals in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Following the crash, police arrested a 19 years old boy and are looking into his involvement. Authorities have yet to confirm whether he was driving the vehicle at the time of the tragedy.
The accident occurred on a provincial route connecting farmland near Vogelwaarde. Authorities are looking into the cause of the incident, which shocked the nation where cycling is an integral part of life and most highways have designated bike lanes.
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten called the situation a nightmare for the children, families, and school community, and that the country mourns with those impacted.
