EU Warns DR Congo Ceasefire Is a Health Emergency Amid Worsening Ebola Outbreak

Brussels: The European Union has stated that securing a ceasefire in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is currently a public health necessity as the region struggles with a rapidly developing Ebola outbreak. EU authorities have warned that continuous fighting hinders attempts to limit the virus by uprooting people and making it difficult for health workers to track infections and provide aid.

The World Health Organization has declared a global public health emergency due to the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. Unlike in previous Ebola outbreaks, there is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for this strain, raising fears among health officials.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO, has urged an immediate ceasefire, warning that violence is triggering population shifts and spreading the disease through crowded camps. Health organisations caution that contact tracing, testing, and treatment procedures are being hampered by conflict in eastern Congo.

In an effort to stop the virus from spreading further throughout the area, the EU has promised to provide more financial support, medical supplies, and airlift operations to help frontline responders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and nearby Uganda.
