EU Announces First-Ever Sanctions on Iran Over Navigation Violations

Brussels: The European Union has announced plans to impose its first-ever sanctions on Iran related to restrictions on freedom of navigation. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas revealed the move ahead of an informal meeting of EU defense ministers, emphasizing the importance of avoiding escalation in the region.
Kallas warned against further tensions and urged all parties to return to diplomatic negotiations. She explained that the sanctions are a new step by the EU to address Iran’s actions that threaten maritime safety and free passage in strategic waterways.
The ministers are also expected to discuss possible additional measures as part of the EU’s naval mission, Operation ASPIDES, aimed at ensuring security and stability in the area. The move signals a shift in EU policy toward more direct action in response to ongoing regional tensions.
