US, Europeans fail to agree on new diplomat overseeing Bosnia peace deal

WASHINGTON DC: The United States and European officials have failed to agree on a new international envoy to oversee peace in Bosnia, triggering a sharp diplomatic rift. Following two days of deadlocked meetings, outgoing High Representative Christian Schmidt confirmed that no consensus had been reached on his replacement after his sudden resignation.

The stalemate centers on a dispute over leadership candidates. Washington strongly backed Italian diplomat Antonio Zanardi Landi and openly blamed ‘European indecisiveness’ for the failed talks. In a stark escalation, the US State Department warned it may completely reconsider its ongoing role in Bosnia’s international peacekeeping presence.

Conversely, major European nations such as France and Germany rallied behind the French diplomat René Troccaz. The high representative post holds sweeping powers to enforce the 1995 Dayton peace accords.
