NEW DELHI: Indian police arrested hotel owner Lavkesh Bajaj late Wednesday following a catastrophic fire at the Flourish Stay hotel in New Delhi that killed 21 people. Investigators are currently probing critical safety failures at the premises.
The victims of the blaze include at least nine Indians and multiple foreign nationals, with individuals from Liberia and Mozambique already identified among the deceased. Trapped residents on upper floors were seen jumping onto mattresses below, leaving several hospitalized with severe burns and fractured bones.
Fatal building fires remain common across India due to a routine disregard for safety regulations and a widespread lack of standard firefighting equipment.
