La Paz: On Monday, thousands of protesters marched through La Paz, Bolivia's administrative capital, calling for President Rodrigo Paz's resignation as the nation's worsening fuel and economic crises caused protests across the country. Miners, trade unions, transport workers, and rural groups were among protesters who blocked roads and engaged in fight with security forces close to government buildings.
As demonstrators accused the government of failing to handle rising living expenses, fuel shortages, and a growing deficit of US dollars, police used tear gas in some areas of the city. Delivery of food, fuel, and medical supplies around the nation was hindered by road blockades, and some banks temporarily closed their operations in La Paz due to concerns about rising violence.
Bolivia's President Paz took office less than a year ago, following nearly two decades of leftist administration. He argued that tight budgets and reduced fuel subsidies are necessary to stabilise the country's economy. Despite protest leaders' allegations that protests are motivated by worsening living conditions, his government has accused supporters of former President Evo Morales of stirring unrest.
Officials say at least three protest-related deaths have occured in recent days, and emotions remain high amid what analysts call Bolivia's worst political and economic crisis in decades.
