Beijing: As geopolitical tensions intensified after US President Donald Trump postponed a planned military strike on Iran amid renewed diplomatic attempts in the Gulf, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday.
Days after Trump's recent widely reported trip to Beijing, Putin came to China with the intention of strengthening Moscow and Beijing's strategic alliance in an increasingly volatile world. The two presidents presented their alliance as a shield on Western influence while talking about trade, energy cooperation, and regional security.
Tensions in the Gulf escalated after the meeting, as Trump declared that Washington had temporarily suspended military action against Iran to allow ongoing negotiations and mediation efforts by regional allies, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
Following reports of drone seizures and repeated warnings about a risk of volatility near important shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for the world's oil supplies, regional security fears also grew.
The incidents, according to analysts, highlight China's growing diplomatic involvement as Beijing aims to uphold tight relations with both Moscow and Gulf countries while establishing itself as a key participant in international crisis resolution.
