Putin's Beijing Trip Aims to Show that China Ties are Stronger
Beijing: Vladimir Putin will arrive in Beijing on Tuesday for high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a visit aimed at reinforcing the close strategic partnership between Russia and China just days after US President Donald Trump concluded a landmark trip to China.
According to the Kremlin, Putin and Xi are expected to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and exchange views on major international and regional developments, including the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
The visit comes at a time when Moscow remains diplomatically isolated over the Ukraine conflict and increasingly dependent on Beijing economically, particularly through energy exports. China has become a major buyer of Russian oil following Western sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Ahead of the visit, both leaders exchanged congratulatory messages marking 30 years of strategic cooperation between their countries. Xi said China-Russia cooperation had “continuously deepened and solidified,” while Putin described relations as reaching “a truly unprecedented level.”
The two leaders are also expected to sign a joint declaration following their talks.
Analysts say the meeting is intended to project stability and unity between Beijing and Moscow at a time of shifting global alliances and heightened geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Iran and Ukraine.
Putin is also expected to discuss energy cooperation with China, as global oil markets remain under pressure amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
