CARACAS:  Venezuela's interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, has ordered an official investigation into the death of political prisoner Victor Hugo Quero Navas while in state custody.

The high-profile probe, announced on Monday, will cooperate with the Ombudsman’s and Public Prosecutor's offices to fully clarify the timeline of events. The announcement follows national shock after Quero’s 81-year-old mother, Carmen Navas, died on Sunday, just days after finally confirming her son's passing. Quero, 51, was arrested in January 2025 on terrorism charges under the ousted administration of Nicolas Maduro.

The prisons ministry confirmed that Quero actually died nearly a year ago, on July 24, 2025, from acute respiratory failure at a military hospital. Authorities claimed his file showed no relative had formally requested a visit during his detention.

According to the rights group Foro Penal, roughly 20 political prisoners have died in custody since 2014, and around 500 remain jailed despite a recent amnesty program.
