Kinshasa: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege issued a stark warning this week, describing the global scramble for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) strategic minerals as ‘predatory’ and ‘criminal.’
Speaking from his Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, the renowned surgeon argued that the demand for materials essential to the green energy transition is fueling a "crisis of our humanity" in the eastern DRC.
Mukwege highlighted that while the world seeks ‘clean’ technologies like electric vehicles, the supply chains for cobalt, coltan, and copper remain ‘red with the blood of Congolese women and children.’
He specifically condemned recent international trade agreements that bypass the DRC, alleging they allow neighboring regimes to "launder" plundered minerals. Mukwege, who has treated over 50,000 survivors of sexual violence, maintains that the illegal exploitation of these resources remains the primary driver of armed conflict and mass displacement in the region.
