Lebanon, Israel to hold new talks in US as ceasefire nears end

Washington DC: Lebanon and Israel are set to begin a critical third round of peace talks in Washington this Thursday, May 14, as their current three-week ceasefire nears its expiration.
Brokered by the United States, the negotiations at the State Department aim to secure a permanent security agreement and border delineation, marking a potential shift after decades of technical warfare.
The talks occur under the shadow of persistent violence; despite the truce, hundreds have died in recent Israeli strikes, including a high-casualty event in Beirut targeting Hezbollah leadership.
For the first time, military representatives will join the delegations to discuss the ‘complete disarmament of Hezbollah’ and the restoration of Lebanese state authority core demands from the U.S. and Israel. While President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are currently on a state visit to China, U.S. ambassadors Mike Huckabee and Michel Issa will facilitate the two-day intensive session.
