Thai PM says clip vowing reopened Cambodia border 'obviously AI'

BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has dismissed a viral audio clip claiming Thailand would reopen its border with Cambodia as ‘obviously’ AI-generated. Speaking on Wednesday, Anutin insisted that the checkpoints, which have been closed since tensions and deadly clashes erupted last June, will remain shut.
The 28-second clip, which circulated on social media platforms like TikTok, purported to show the Prime Minister promising a phased reopening by early June to aid the economy. However, Anutin jokingly told reporters, ‘I do not speak that well,’ and confirmed he never made such remarks.
The debunking comes amid heightened regional tension following Thailand's cancellation of MOU 44, a 2001 maritime agreement. While Cambodia expressed disappointment over the move, Anutin emphasized that Thailand is in "no rush" to negotiate and will follow international mechanisms under UNCLOS. Meanwhile, the Thai army has increased patrols and drone surveillance to strengthen border security.
