Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a major summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the two global powers seek to address growing tensions over trade, technology, Iran, and Taiwan.
Trump landed at Beijing Capital International Airport aboard Air Force One, marking the first visit to China by a US president in nearly a decade. Upon arrival, he was welcomed with an official reception featuring hundreds of Chinese youth waving American and Chinese flags.
Joining Trump on the trip were prominent business leaders including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, underscoring the economic and technology-focused agenda surrounding the visit.
Speaking during the journey to Beijing, Trump said he hoped discussions with Xi would help “open up” China further to American businesses and innovation.
The summit comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade restrictions, artificial intelligence technology, and regional security issues. Discussions are also expected to focus on Iran, as China remains a major buyer of Iranian oil despite US sanctions.
Trump and Xi are scheduled to hold formal talks at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People on Thursday, followed by a state banquet. The US president is also expected to visit the historic Temple of Heaven during the trip.
Trade relations are likely to dominate the discussions, with both sides considering an extension to the tariff truce reached last year after months of escalating tariffs between the world’s two largest economies.
Taiwan is also expected to be a sensitive topic during the summit, especially following recent US arms sales to the self-ruled island claimed by China.
Chinese officials said Beijing welcomes Trump’s visit and expressed readiness to expand cooperation while managing differences between the two countries.
