Berlin:Germany is intensifying its digital security strategy, announcing plans on Tuesday to develop ‘active cyberdefence’ capabilities to retaliate against rising online threats. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt intends to push legislation through the cabinet this month, granting security services the authority to ‘disrupt and destroy’ attacker infrastructure, including servers and software used in strikes.

The move follows a staggering 200 billion euros in economic damage caused by cybercrime last year. Officials highlighted a significant increase in Russian-linked activism and the growing danger of AI-based tools, which allow criminals to execute faster, more precise attacks.

In 2025 alone, Germany registered approximately 334,000 cybercrime cases. Financial regulator BaFin also warned that AI can now exploit system vulnerabilities with remarkable speed, urging companies to prioritize cybersecurity investments.
