Canberra: The Australian Federal Police have charged two women with slavery offenses related to their time in Syria. The women, aged 31 and 47, allegedly held a Yazidi woman against her will for several months after joining the Islamic State in 2014. Both were repatriated to Australia in 2022 from the Al-Hol camp.
These arrests highlight the ongoing effort to prosecute citizens for atrocities committed abroad.
The Yazidi community suffered mass enslavement and brutality under IS control, and these charges represent a significant step toward legal accountability for survivors. Australian officials emphasize that the passage of time does not diminish the gravity of these human rights violations.
