Tokyo: Japanese baseball authorities are considering stricter measures against dangerous batting swings after a horrifying incident left an umpire seriously injured during a professional game.
Home-plate umpire Takuto Kawakami was struck in the head by a bat that slipped from the hands of Yakult Swallows player José Osuna during a game on April 16. The impact caused Kawakami to collapse instantly, and he was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery. Reports say he remains unconscious weeks after the accident.
The incident has shocked the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) community and sparked intense discussions about player safety and batting discipline. Officials are now reviewing whether punishments should be introduced for reckless or dangerous swings that put umpires and players at risk.
The NPB has described the accident as an “extremely serious matter” and has also begun reassessing the protective equipment worn by umpires. Fans, players, and commentators have called for stronger safety standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
