Kuwait’s foreign minister on Thursday called for stronger international coordination to secure food and fertiliser supply chains, while reiterating Kuwait’s stance on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Sheikh Jarah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who chaired the Kuwaiti delegation, took part in a ministerial meeting held via video conference to support global food security and access to fertilisers. The session was co-chaired by Italy and Croatia and included members of the Arab League, the MED9 group, and Balkan states.

In his remarks, the minister welcomed the initiative by Italy and Croatia, saying it highlighted the need for “an operational and effective mechanism” to improve coordination on energy, food and fertiliser supply chains amid ongoing global disruptions.

He stressed that enhancing cooperation among participating countries was essential to stabilising markets and ensuring the flow of critical commodities.

Separately, Sheikh Jarah reaffirmed Kuwait’s position that the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway governed by international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which guarantees the right of transit passage.

He rejected any unilateral measures that could alter its legal status, warning against attempts to “create or impose a new status quo” outside international legal frameworks.
