ROME: Italian sporting icon Alex Zanardi has passed away at the age of 59, his family announced on Saturday. The former Formula One driver, who became a global symbol of resilience after losing both legs in a 2001 racing accident, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

Zanardi’s journey from a life-threatening crash in Germany to becoming a four-time Paralympic gold medalist transformed the perception of disability worldwide.

Despite undergoing 15 operations and having his heart stop multiple times after the initial accident, he famously chose to focus on the 'half of him that remained'.

His legacy extends beyond his handbike victories at the London and Rio Games. Through his charity, Obiettivo3, and his advocacy, Zanardi became an enduring symbol of courage, teaching millions that any trial in life can be turned into a lesson in strength and dignity.
