India raises cooking gas, jet fuel prices

New Delhi: India has announced an immediate price hike for commercial cooking gas and international jet fuel as supply strains from the Middle East conflict intensify.

The state-run Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) confirmed a revision in the cost of bulk and commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders. This includes a substantial increase of ₹993 for the 19-kg cylinder typically used by businesses.

These price adjustments follow mounting pressures on energy imports caused by the ongoing war involving Iran. The conflict has significantly disrupted regional supply chains since it began in late February.

While the government continues to prioritise uninterrupted fuel supplies for households and essential institutions, these new market restrictions have created a difficult environment for the private sector. Many manufacturers, power plants, and restaurants are now facing significant operational challenges as a result.

India imports roughly 60% of its LPG to sustain the world’s largest population. To mitigate Middle Eastern supply disruptions, New Delhi is pivoting toward alternative partners in Russia and Africa.

Despite market volatility and this strategic shift, the government maintains a positive outlook. Officials state the nation faces no overall fuel shortage, ensuring essential sectors remain supplied.
