Washington DC: Google is rolling out its generative AI assistant, Gemini, to millions of vehicles equipped with Google built-in technology.
The move replaces the traditional voice assistant with a more conversational and context-aware interface, which is designed to act as a digital co-pilot for motorists.
The new system allows drivers to use natural language to manage various tasks, such as finding specific stops along a route or summarising incoming messages. Unlike previous software, the AI is capable of understanding follow-up questions and maintaining context throughout a journey, making the experience feel less like operating software.
Drivers can also use the assistant to manage vehicle-specific settings, such as checking battery range or charging needs.
The deployment is being spearheaded by major partners, including General Motors, which is bringing the technology to approximately four million vehicles across its Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC brands.
This update is not limited to new purchases, as compatible models from as far back as 2022 will receive the upgrade via over-the-air software updates. Initially launching in English for the United States, the rollout is expected to expand to further languages and regions in the coming months.
Industry experts view the move as a significant step in integrating advanced generative AI directly into the everyday driving experience.
