UN to assess Iranian attacks on Middle East telecoms

New York City: The United Nations' telecoms agency, the ITU, has agreed to monitor and report on the impact of Iranian attacks targeting telecommunications infrastructure in the Middle East.

The decision follows a draft resolution submitted by the Gulf Cooperation Council and Jordan, which highlighted specific disruptions to civilian networks in Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.

Regional tensions escalated following the outbreak of war on February 28, leading to retaliatory strikes by Tehran against infrastructure across the Gulf.

The ITU council adopted the monitoring mandate by consensus, tasking the secretariat with assessing the broader implications for global connectivity and infrastructure resilience.

While the agency moved forward with the investigation into these attacks, a separate proposal from Iran seeking aid to reconstruct its own damaged broadcasting and ICT sectors failed to reach a consensus.

As the global authority for radio frequencies and 5G, the ITU remains focused on maintaining regional communications during this period of conflict.
