Pentagon makes deal to expand use of Google AI: reports

Washington DC:The U.S. Pentagon is undergoing a massive shift in its artificial intelligence strategy, trading its reliance on Anthropic for a broader partnership with Google, OpenAI, and xAI.
This transition follows a period of friction; President Trump ordered the government to cease using Anthropic’s ‘Claude’ after the company was designated a national security supply chain risk.
The rift stemmed largely from Anthropic's restrictions on using its tech for mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry.
While Pentagon officials argue that diversifying vendors avoids overreliance and maintains ‘operational flexibility,’ the move has reignited internal strife at Google. Over 600 employees have signed a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, demanding the company reject the deal.
Critics warn that the opaque nature of classified operations makes it impossible to ensure AI isn't leveraged for civil liberty violations or ‘terrible harms’.
